My Windows Installer does not work and I can’t install any software on my office PC (Windows 7, 64-bit Ultimate).
When I try to install new software first it pops up a box that says
“Windows Installer
Preparing to install…”
Then it errors out with:
“The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.”
Any ideas? I’ve searched google for too long, tried to many registry fixes, etc. I’ve verified the service is running. There may be some $$$ or free photos involved if you can fix!

Awesome, I’ll check that out in the morning. Thanks!
Just tried those.. no luck 🙁 Thanks for posting, those were new solutions to me. I don’t even have the subfolder they mention under the registry entry, nor the key to change the value. I’m just gonna hire someone from odesk.com to remote in and fix it. I’ve lost hours on this issue and getting nowhere.
Did you try System Restore to before the last time you made a change? And there’s nothing like a fresh clean Windows install.
Great idea, but too late, don’t have any system restores that old, I’ve been dealing with this for a while. I’ve actually hired someone to fix… so far, nothing. I just barely got my windows set up how I want it, hate to think about reinstalling (just installed this windows about 4 months ago).

Thanks Sean, tried em all last night. There is seriously something busted. Hate to say it, but I may just have to reinstall windows. I have a sneaky feeling that when I used Windows Installer Cleanup Utility a while back I “cleaned up” a little bit too aggressively.
I have a post on Microsoft’s tech forum now, hoping that may help.
I finally got it fixed… did an in place upgrade with my same version of windows. Kept all my settings and 99% everything still works.
